Why Federal Budgets Matter

The ELCA Advocacy Office continues to monitor and provide information about ongoing budget negotiations in Washington. The Advocacy Office is encouraging members to contact Representatives and Senators to balance the budget responsibly and to preserve effective programs that serve the most vulnerable of our citizens. Visit http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Justice/Advocacy/Issues.aspx to find out more about the issues, and remember Jesus' words, "as you did it to one of the least of these . . . you did it also to me." Your voice makes a difference.

Archbishop Chacour Presents at First

On Sunday, June 5, 2016, First Lutheran was honored to welcome Archbishop Elias Chacour. His presentation, entitled, What Are the Things That Make for Peace?, was a message that comes straight from his own experiences in building peace in the midst of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Chacour has focused much of his peacemaking ministry on education for children, young people and adults. He has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize for the amazing and inspiring work he has done in the midst of great conflict. His life was summarized in the introductory remarks, but came to life as he told his own story.

Advocates for Justice and Peace

The Social Ministry Committee coordinates advocacy efforts from time to time as critical issues arise. In the past, we have worked toward passing anti-bullying legislation for Nebraska's schools, a moratorium on capital punishment, alleviating global hunger and sponsoring the annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki Lantern Float.

Bread for the World

First Lutheran is a covenant church in partnership with Bread for the World. Activities include education about world hunger and an annual offering of letters directed to our Congressional delegation urging their support of legislation toward ending hunger in the United States and throughout the world.
