This winter, the First Lutheran community came together in a powerful way to support individuals being released from incarceration during the coldest months of the year. Through our Winter Clothing Drive, 379 clothing items were donated—filling two carloads delivered to the Lancaster County Jail.
Donations included 51 winter coats, 66 hats and scarves, 88 sweatshirts, 61 pairs of pants, 53 pairs of socks, 45 gloves, and many additional items. These contributions make a meaningful difference for those who often leave the jail without adequate winter attire. Some individuals arrive during summer months wearing shorts, flip-flops, or sleeveless shirts and, when released in winter, have no warm clothing to take with them. Many also lack support from family or loved ones, leaving them especially vulnerable.
All donated items are placed in the jail’s clothing “closet,” where staff provide individuals with what they need upon release. First Lutheran member and jail employee Sherri Cotter emphasized the importance of this ministry, sharing, “First Lutheran never ceases to amaze me. They show up when the need is there and deliver on that need!”
We are deeply grateful for the generosity, compassion, and care shown by our congregation. This drive was a collaborative effort of the Community Connections & Collaborations Team and the Social Ministry Committee, and it stands as a testament to the impact we can make together—meeting real needs with dignity and grace.
