Our middle schoolers had a full day in South Dakota yesterday, filled with service, connection and exploration. After breakfast and a devotional centered on their theme, “Be the Light,” they headed to South Canyon Lutheran Church to shine.
At the church, Sharon witnessed God’s presence as the youth worked with quilters to tie 22 quilts. The quilters shared not only their craft but also their stories, offering life lessons and engaging in meaningful conversations. After a shared devotion and snacks, the quilters gifted each of the three congregations a quilt, a touching gesture. The youth found great joy in tying the quilts, a simple yet impactful act of service.
In the afternoon, the group visited Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Greg saw God’s work in the kindness of EMTs and good Samaritans who helped a woman with a twisted ankle at Mount Rushmore. Meanwhile, Kent, Stephen, and Daniel marveled at the beauty of creation and the determination behind these monumental sculptures.
At Crazy Horse, Mike reflected on the dedication that has sustained the project for 77 years, led by the third generation of a family honoring their grandfather’s dream. A film about the monument highlighted history and figures like Crazy Horse, Standing Bear and Red Cloud, reminding them of their ties to Nebraska.
The group returned to the hotel for some much-needed rest, tired but eager to serve again today!
