Stephen Ministry: A Lifeline in Times of Need

Life often brings challenges that leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to move forward. In these moments, having someone to lean on can make all the difference. That’s the mission of Stephen Ministry – a compassionate Christian care program focused on listening, presence and support during life’s toughest seasons.

Since 2008, Stephen Ministry at First Lutheran Church has been a source of hope and care for those in need. Over 40 individuals have been trained as Stephen Ministers, providing confidential, Christ-centered care. This ministry isn’t about “fixing” problems; it’s about walking alongside care receivers through difficult times with compassion and understanding.

At its core, Stephen Ministry believes no one should face life’s struggles alone. It offers a safe, nonjudgmental space where care receivers feel heard and supported. As one reflection beautifully puts it: “Stephen Ministry is about being present, sharing burdens, and embodying God’s love during life’s most challenging moments.”

One care receiver shared how Stephen Ministry helped her through a difficult year of loss, her husband’s cancer recurrence, and caring for her grandson. “My Stephen Minister always offered the right prayer, even when I couldn’t find the words,” she said. This sacred companionship carried her through one of her hardest seasons.

For Stephen Ministers, this role is both humbling and rewarding. One Minister shared, “Walking beside someone in need isn’t about solving their problems, but helping them feel heard and supported.” Another noted how the training improved their relationships: “You learn to listen without judgment. It’s a gift of connection.”

At First Lutheran Church, 10 active Stephen Ministers provide a safe, confidential space for anyone facing grief, stress or major life changes. Their care is free and open to everyone.

This Sunday, we celebrate the commissioning of two new Stephen Ministers, Eleanor Anderson and Barbara Johnson. For Eleanor, becoming a Stephen Minister is her way of giving back after feeling so welcomed as a new member. This sense of community reflects the heart of Stephen Ministry and First Lutheran’s mission – to walk together in faith, compassion and love.

If you’re facing life’s challenges, you don’t have to face them alone. To connect with a Stephen Minister, email stephen.ministry@flclincoln.org. At First Lutheran Church, we are committed to loving Christ and one another. Together, we can face life’s storms, knowing we are all children of God.
