History of the Baptismal Font’s Copper Cover

By February 19, 2020News

The copper cover of the baptismal font in our former Sanctuary was a gift from Dr. & Mrs. Letteer Lewis in March, 1968. The stones used were the modern equivalents of the stones used in the breastplate of Aaron (Exodus 20:17-20). There are 12 stones – one for each month of the year. Beginning at the seam on the cover and going counter clock-wise: Sard, Chrysolite, Emerald (glass substitute), Garnet, Lapis Lazuli, Zoisite, Hyacinth, Agate, Amethyst, Beryl, Onyx and Jasper. The stones were prepared by Gay Miller of Hastings. The cover represents the crown of life given to a person through baptism.
