Extravaganza Inspires, Renews Youth Ministry Leaders

In late January, Laura Graulty and Lillie Rademacher traveled to St. Louis for the ELCA Youth Ministry Extravaganza, a national gathering for those who serve in youth ministry. They returned home energized, inspired and filled with new ideas for our congregation.

“This was my third Extravaganza,” Laura shared. “I came home with a revitalization I didn’t know I needed and strategies I can’t wait to put into place.”

For Lillie, it was her first time attending and her first as a new Youth Ministry Coordinator. One of the most meaningful moments came during opening worship, when new leaders were invited forward for a blessing. “It was very powerful,” she said. “I felt the Holy Spirit moving through everyone. It reminded me of my calling—to be with God’s people, to rejoice with them and to be salt and light for God’s Kingdom.”

During the gathering, they attended workshops and general sessions on VBS planning, creative approaches to youth ministry, discerning meaningful youth trips and creating welcoming spaces for neurodivergent youth. “I learned so much,” Lillie said. “I’m especially excited about ideas for VBS—crafts, decorating, immersive themes. I’ve only volunteered before, but now I’m eager to help plan and lead.” A session on embodied equity and neurodiversity particularly resonated with her. “It was a wonderful reminder that everyone brings something to the table and gave us tools to help create a welcoming space for all.”

There was also time for fun and connection—friendship bracelets, laughter, a visit to the Gateway Arch and even a game show. Lillie found herself as a competitor on stage Saturday night—and won! “The audience helped me out, and I ended up winning a pocket Jesus,” she said. “He now lives on my keyring to remind me of my glorious triumph!” Laura also managed to snap a photo with ELCA Presiding Bishop Curry, much to Lillie’s envy.

“I came home with a full cup,” Lillie reflected, “believing that I can make a difference in the world.”

We look forward to seeing how their renewed energy and fresh ideas will shape the months ahead in youth ministry.
