Faithful Conversations: Reflecting on the World’s Events Through a Lens of Faith

What started as Faithful February Conversations, a lay-led response to rapid changes in the federal government, is going strong five months later! Rooted in Martin Luther’s view of government as a gift from God for the good of the neighbor and the care of the world, over 55 people have joined discussions about what it means for a person of faith to be a responsible citizen.

Weekly Faithful Conversations gatherings near the church’s main entrance quickly became a safe place for people to express wide-ranging emotions, including disbelief, fear, sadness, uncertainty, disorientation, anger, frustration, helplessness and worry. Questions were welcomed. As they engaged in thoughtful reflection, participants encouraged one another. Meaningful connections among members grew. People who were initially uncomfortable making calls or writing to elected officials built confidence. Resources shared ranged from recommendations for reliable news and information sources to ELCA publications, to participants’ own life experiences and expertise. At each session, moments of quiet followed readings from the Sunday texts, verses from hymns, insights from sermons.

The group now finds itself diving deeper, better informed about the events of the week, sharing articles and helpful books and interviews. Particular attention is given to legislation or actions that affect children, families and those who find themselves on the margins of society. Participants think carefully about their next faithful steps. Some are encouragers who seek opportunities each day to offer a kind word or a listening ear. Others create, bake, savor the beauty of nature, serve a meal, donate to a nonprofit, visit the office of an elected official, attend a town hall or a peaceful protest. Many can be found singing or playing an instrument, visiting a care center, gardening, exercising. Others are sustained through mindfulness practices or social media fasting.

Weekly attendance averages 10 participants, in different combinations. Our intent is to help one another be spiritually grounded for the long haul. As Pastor Bill Peterson noted one Sunday, “We are all learning to treasure “the gift of our voices.’” And, guided by Elaine Kruse’s wisdom, “Pray. We can always pray.”

The group is committed to being a safe, respectful place where differing opinions can be heard. Newcomers are always welcome Sunday mornings at 10:40 AM during summer worship or 9:30 AM starting September 7.
