Finding Quiet in the Chaos: Living Sunday’s Gospel in Your Daily Life

By June 10, 2025News

Philip’s request in Sunday’s Gospel reading (John 14:8-17, 25-27) is one of the most relatable moments in Scripture. “Show us the Father, and we’ll be satisfied,” he says to Jesus, voicing that longing we all have for clarity, proof and a tangible experience of God. How often have we wished for a clear sign to quiet our doubts?

Jesus’ response cuts deep: “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still don’t know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” This isn’t just an answer; it’s a game-changer. To know Jesus is to know God. To see Jesus is to understand the Father’s heart. It shifts the focus from needing proof to recognizing that God is already revealed in Jesus.

And then Jesus takes it a step further: the Holy Spirit. The presence Philip is asking for won’t be something external or flashy – it will be within us, guiding and empowering us every day.

Like Philip, we often think we need something big and miraculous to feel reassured of God’s presence. But God often shows up in the most unexpected, ordinary ways. God is revealed through Jesus on the cross, in the Word, in simple sacraments like bread and wine and in the quiet, steady work of the Spirit in our daily lives.

The Spirit is moving even now – in the voices of those who are overlooked, in small acts of love and justice, and in the everyday rhythms of life. These seemingly small, humble moments often create the biggest ripples.

We might cry out, like Philip, “Show us the Father!” But Jesus nudges us to notice what’s already here. God is present, active and speaking if we’re willing to pause, look and listen.

Here are a few things to think about as you reflect on this Gospel and the Spirit’s role in your life:

  • Are there areas where you’re still saying, “Show me the Father”? Could you be overlooking what God has already given you?
  • How can you better notice where the Spirit is already at work – in your community, your relationships or within yourself?
  • What small, meaningful actions can you take this week to reveal God’s presence to others?

The Spirit is already at work. The invitation is simple: listen, trust and act.
