Finding Quiet in the Chaos: Living Sunday’s Gospel in Your Daily Life

Change is hard and separation can be even harder. Whether it’s a child starting daycare or a young adult leaving for college, preparing someone for a time when you won’t be with them can feel both heartbreaking and hopeful.

I remember a moment with my 4-year-old grandson, Hudson, that captures this beautifully. As I was leaving his home, I told him how much I would miss him. He looked at me with big, innocent eyes and said, “Grandma, I will always be in your heart.” His words stayed with me – not just for their sweetness, but for their deep truth.
This is the same reassurance Jesus gave his disciples as he prepared them for his departure in Sunday’s Gospel (John 14:23-29). They walked with him, ate with him, learned from him and witnessed miracles. Jesus wasn’t just their teacher; he was their friend, guide and anchor. Losing his physical presence must have felt overwhelming.

But Jesus, like a loving parent, didn’t leave them without hope. He didn’t just say “Good luck!” Instead, he promised his continued presence through the Holy Spirit.
As his crucifixion approached, Jesus prepared his disciples. He openly told them, “I am going away.” Naturally, they were confused and troubled. Yet Jesus assured them they wouldn’t be left alone. The Holy Spirit would guide, comfort and teach them. This wasn’t just a promise – it was a gift from God.

Jesus also gave them peace – not the fleeting, conditional peace of the world, but lasting, true peace. He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

What a gift for those facing unimaginable loss and uncertainty. This peace wasn’t passive – it was active. It gave them strength and courage to live out their calling despite the challenges ahead.

Like parents preparing their children for independence, Jesus gave his disciples – and us – everything we need to continue in faith, even in his absence. When you feel Jesus is far away, remember this: His Spirit is always with you. His peace is a gift that never fades. Like Hudson’s sweet reminder, “I will always be in your heart,” Jesus’ Spirit remains with you, guiding every step.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you experienced peace in moments of change or separation?
  • How does the Holy Spirit shape how you face uncertainty?
  • Take a moment this week to reflect on Jesus’ peace and share his love with someone in need.
