In 2018, our quilts went to Lebanon and our school kits were shipped to Lebanon and Senegal. Our gifts are just a few of the many ways Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is providing support to Syrian refugees and Lebanese families. LWR offers specialized agricultural training and employment opportunities in a land where refugees struggle to establish a new life and source of income and help Lebanese families deal with employment hardships.
This year, First Lutheran will continue to support the important work of Lutheran World Relief. We will be sending 40 LWR personal care kits that were assembled by our families at this summer’s Vacation Bible School. These kits bring simple items for much-needed self-care and germ fighting when homes are destroyed or families have to flee for their safety.
Our volunteer quilters made 60 handmade quilts this past year and will be blessed in worship on Sunday before they are shipped around the world by LWR to those in need of comfort, warmth and shelter.
Since August, we have been collecting donations of school supplies for LWR school kits – the one thing that may keep a child in school who can’t otherwise afford the cost of basic school supplies. We will be assembling 300 school kits in the Commons immediately following the 8:15 am worship service on Sunday. Plan to join the assembly line as you exit worship or come at 9:15 am and participate. Our children will also be assembling school kits on Sunday during FaithTrek hour.
