On September 11, 2024, our First Lutheran community mourned the loss of one of its most humble, generous and talented members, Dan Howard (https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/lincoln-ne/dan-howard-11984762). Recognized by The Omaha World-Herald as Nebraska’s most highly decorated artist, Dan’s remarkable career spanned over 50 years, during which he garnered more than 100 prizes, awards, and honors as both a professional artist and an art educator.
His artwork is featured in numerous prestigious collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; the Lowe Art Museum in Miami; the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock; the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha; and the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Additionally, his pieces are showcased by various corporations such as Hallmark Cards, United Airlines, American Airlines, 3M, Pepsi Cola, Holiday Inn, Sheraton Hotels, and Conagra. Locally, his art is displayed at Assurity Life Insurance, Farmers Mutual Insurance and the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Most notably for our First Lutheran community is the artwork he and his wife donated in 2020 – a rendition of the Last Supper – “After Leonardo’s Magnum.” This striking piece hangs prominently in the church Commons area, captivating passersby while carrying deep intentional meaning in its design and layout.
In January 2022, Dan presented his insights on the painting, his artistic influences, medium, and working methods to the Adult Forum. You can view this enlightening presentation at https://vimeo.com/673189382. Following the presentation, First Lutheran member Barb Duncanson interviewed Dan about the painting, drawing comparisons between his work and Leonardo da Vinci’s original Last Supper, as well as discussing his illustrious career as a renowned artist.
We encourage you to take a moment to read Barb’s story, published in February 2022. It poignantly showcases why Dan Howard’s legacy will endure for years to come, highlighting his extraordinary artistry and talent.
