Lent at First Lutheran

We are Better Together when we are in relationship with our loving God and Savior and when we are in relationship with one another. The stories we share with one another is an essential part of our connection to family, friends and to community. Through story we reveal what cannot be seen and make ourselves known to one another in personal and sometimes profound ways. We deepen the connections that make us human.

During this Lenten season we are invited to engage with one another through story. Our Lenten devotional highlights welcome stories from members of our congregation. They share times when they were welcomed and times when they welcomed others. Every Sunday, through Lent, we will add to the devotional daily stories of welcoming and being welcomed, Scripture, reflection questions and activities you can do with family members or friends during the week. Saturday devotions will be based on reflections on the hymn, All Are Welcome, written by Marty Haugen. Through these stories may we appreciate that we are Better Together when we welcome one another into community. You can read the devotional as a PDF or as an online digital book throughout Lent.

Small groups and prayer experiences will be the focus of our Wednesdays in Lent (March 1-29) when we explore the theme, Better Together, and gather for Holden Prayer Around the Cross worship. Weekly 30-minute small group time each Wednesday after the noon worship service and before the 6:30 pm service will offer us intentional time with one another as we share stories, reflect on our shared connections and seek to know one another wholeheartedly. Group activities for FaithTrek age kids (ages 4-5th grade) and small groups for middle and high school youth are also planned in the evening. The nursery will be staffed to allow parents of little ones to connect in a small group. Sharing stories and making connections has no age requirements! Better yet, there is no preparation required to engage in a small group!

Soup lunch and supper will also be served. Come to the Activity Center for soup, fellowship and connecting with a small group. (Do you have a favorite soup you can share for a Wednesday lunch or dinner? Sign up online!

In our Wednesday worship service, you are invited to pray through spoken word, moving liturgy and contemplative song through Holden Prayer around the Cross. These contemplative services invite us to come together into meditative worship that focuses on the cross and God’s promises found there.

Each Wednesday in March (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th) willl offer you:
Noon-12:30 pm  – Holden Prayer Around the Cross worship  in the Sanctuary
12:30-1:00 pm  – Soup lunch and Better Together small groups in the Activity Center
5:30-6:15 pm  – Soup supper in the Activity Center
6:00-6:30 pm  – Better Together small groups for ALL ages; Nursery will be staffed
6:30-7:00 pm – Holden Prayer Around the Cross worship in the Sanctuary

The Prayer Around the Cross themes during the Lenten season will be :
March 1  – A Heart of Flesh (prayer for renewal and mercy based on Ezekiel 36 and Psalm 51)
March 8 – Hunger for God (intercessory prayer)
March 15  – Sighs Too Deep (intercessory prayer based on Romans 8)
March 22 – Our Light and Our Salvation (intercessory prayer based on Psalm 27)
March 29 – For the Healing of the Nations (intercessory prayer for peoples, lands and nations based on Isaiah 65 and Revelation 21)

We truly are Better Together when we are in relationship with our loving God and when we are in relationship with one another.
