Living God’s To-Do List: Embracing Grace and the Kingdom Here and Now

In Sunday’s Gospel from Luke 12:32-40, Jesus offers comfort with these words: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” But right after this reassurance comes a challenging “To Do List”: sell your possessions, give to those in need, stay prepared, keep your lamps lit and live in a way that reflects God’s presence. It might feel overwhelming or at odds with our priorities, but maybe that’s the point.

Have you ever felt torn between your plans and what God is asking of you? Jesus’ list can seem intimidating, like an impossible set of expectations. But it’s not about perfection or checking off every box. It’s an invitation to shift our focus, align our lives with God’s vision and experience the Kingdom of God here and now.

God’s “To Do List” is less about perfection and more about intention. It’s a call to prioritize generosity, forgiveness, justice and care for creation – practical ways to reflect God’s presence in the world. Yes, it can feel like a lot, but Jesus reminds us we’re not acting out of fear or obligation. Instead, we’re responding to grace: “It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” This isn’t a reward for effort – it’s a gift of love.

The Kingdom of God isn’t just a future promise; it’s something we can glimpse now. We see it in kindness, generosity and forgiveness – in the ways we care for “the least among us.” These small acts of grace allow us to experience and share God’s Kingdom in real, tangible ways.

At its core, Jesus’ message is one of hope and empowerment. God isn’t burdening us with impossible expectations but giving us the chance to be agents of change, love and grace in a world that needs it. By living this way, we draw closer to God and bring the Kingdom closer to others.

Reflection Questions:
  • Are there “To Do List” items in your life keeping you from fully embracing God’s priorities?
  • How can you practice generosity or forgiveness this week to experience and share God’s Kingdom?
  • Where have you seen glimpses of God’s Kingdom in your daily life and how can you help others see it too?
