How long will you keep us in suspense? That’s the question the religious leaders ask Jesus in Sunday’s Gospel, John 10:22-30. But doesn’t it feel like a question we’ve all asked?
Suspense is a natural part of life. Sometimes it’s exciting, like waiting to unwrap a gift or anticipating a trip. But often, it’s the hard kind that ties your stomach in knots. Waiting for answers, unsure if a call will come, if a relationship will heal or if the next decision will bring clarity or chaos can leave us feeling nervous and disoriented.
What’s keeping you in suspense right now? Is it work uncertainty, challenges with your kids, concerns about the country, health issues, money troubles or even doubts in your faith ? You’re not alone in this uncertainty. But here’s the twist about suspense: it’s not just about the external wait. It’s about what happens within us. The real growth lies in how we confront our fears, doubts, and desire for control.
The religious leaders in Sunday’s Gospel demanded clarity from Jesus, echoing sentiments we often direct at God:
“If you’re merciful, help me…”
“If you’re loving, show me…”
“If you’re powerful, fix this…”
These cries often reveal our impatience, fear and discomfort with the unknown. And like the leaders, we long for plain answers. But Jesus rarely gives direct responses. Instead, he points to his works – a reminder of who he is. Turning water into wine, feeding crowds, healing the broke, and raising the dead, Jesus’ actions embody his love and purpose. What if, instead of demanding answers, we learn to trust his works?
Jesus reassures us in the Gospel, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me… no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Suspense may feel like a cliffhanger, but his promise ensures we are never beyond his care.
Maybe it’s time to reframe our questions from “If you are” to “If I am”:
If I am hearing his voice…
If I am following his guidance…
If I am held in his hand…
Even in suspense, these truths enable us to live with faith. While uncertainty can feel overwhelming, faith reminds us we belong to him. His works reveal his character and love for us, providing peace even when answers are unclear. If we know he holds us securely, we can take the next step, trusting he sees the bigger picture even when we can’t.
Reflection Questions:
• What’s keeping you in suspense? How does it impact you?
• What “If you are” questions do you ask God? Could reframing them as “If I am” reshape your perspective?
• When has trusting God been difficult? How did his works guide you despite unclear answers?
• Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice.” How can you better focus on listening to his guidance during uncertainty?
• How can the promise that “no one will snatch them out of my hand” influence your feelings during suspense?
• How can your experiences with suspense inspire and support others in their struggles?
