This weekend, the congregation made a heartfelt promise to three children – Fiona Mary, Savannah Catherine and Adalyn Marie – and their parents: “to support and pray for them in their new life in Christ.” Sponsors also pledged “to nurture this child in Christian faith as you are empowered by God’s Spirit and to help them live in the covenant of Baptism and in communion with the Church.” But what does such a promise truly entail? How can we ensure that every child is fully welcomed into a vibrant, meaningful life within the body of Christ?
These questions challenges us not only as a collective community but also as individuals in the relationships we build with children and their families. What does it look like to actively live out this promise? How can we naturally offer support to one another as we grow together in faith?
Witnessing a baptism is so much more than observing a ritual, standing as a sponsor or attending worship. It is a sacred commitment. Yet, do we fully grasp the depth of this commitment when we speak the words? And if we do, how do we embody that promise in our daily lives? How do we make sure that each child is not just included but embraced, nurtured and guided toward a full, flourishing life in Christ?
These questions invite us to reflect deeply on what it means to be part of a faith community committed to the spiritual growth and well-being of every child and family among us. The next time you witness a baptism – whether as a parent, sponsor or member of the congregation – embrace the promises you are making with sincerity and intention. Remember, the newly baptized child is counting on each of us to uphold them in faith and love.
