For many children, Friday afternoon means leaving behind more than the classroom—it can also mean leaving behind dependable access to breakfast and lunch until Monday.
And food insecurity is happening right here at home. The Food Bank of Lincoln estimates that 14,330 children in Lancaster County may not know where their next meal will come from. Across Southeast Nebraska, about 1 in 5 children experiences food insecurity.
Having nutritious food over the weekend matters. Children who experience food insecurity can have more difficulty concentrating and learning in school, while consistent access to food helps kids come to class ready to focus, grow and learn.
That’s why Sunday’s Noisy Offering supports First Lutheran’s BackPack Program. Last school year, First Lutheran provided 30 food-filled backpacks each week for students at Morley and Pyrtle elementary schools, and we anticipate a similar need this year. Each backpack costs just over $8, so every gift makes a difference.
During the offering, drop your coins, dollars or check in the silver pot—or hand your gift to one of our children, who will be sure to make some noise with it!
Because no child should have to spend the weekend wondering whether there will be enough to eat.
