First Lutheran family and friends, we’re shifting into high gear for a can’t-miss afternoon at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln! On February 28, from noon to 2:30 PM, join us on a thrilling ride through automotive history, guided by none other than Tim Maack – a First Lutheran member, long-time museum volunteer and all-around car enthusiast.
Buckle Up for the Legacy of Speed
Founded in 1992 by “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith, this museum started as a small operation on Van Dorn Street and has since turbocharged its way to a massive 150,000-square-foot space at 599 Oak Creek Dr. Sitting proudly on the Speedway Motors campus, it’s a mecca for gearheads and curious minds alike, showcasing three floors of automotive history.
What’s under the hood? A jaw-dropping collection of history-making cars, engines, parts, pedal cars, soapbox derby cars, vintage bikes, motorcycles, automotive toys and memorabilia – every piece a story waiting to be discovered. From dirt track daredevils to Indy 500 legends, you’ll even find the world’s largest collection of exotic and historic American racing engines dating all the way back to the early 1900s.
Fun for Motorheads and More
Crowned #1 by USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Attraction for Car Lovers,” this museum isn’t just for those who eat, sleep and breathe engines. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt the rush of nostalgia spotting the first car they drove, the bike they unwrapped on Christmas morning or a lunchbox with a favorite vintage automobile. Even if you couldn’t tell a carburetor from a cupholder, you’ll find something to spark a smile and a memory. Watch this video as the museum’s curator walks you through what you will experience around every corner of the museum!
