Over the past 18+ months, the Vitality Initiative (VI) Team has tackled big questions like, “Who are we? Who is First Lutheran Church?” To uncover our identity, they reflected on key moments and memories that shaped our congregation and continue to influence us today.
As part of this journey, the VI Team asked some members a simple but powerful question: “What memory or story do you have about an event, time or ministry in the life of this church that impacted you?”
Here are some of the stories they heard:
One family shared memories of Pastors Dan and Justin: “We’d never seen two pastors work so closely together, each bringing unique gifts to the church. Whether betting each other to use certain words in sermons, running around in a cardboard bus or inspiring a huge renovation project, they clearly loved serving together. For us, it showed that church is about family and relationships, not just keeping the doors open. That was something we didn’t even know we were missing in our previous church experiences.”
The music program has been a cornerstone of First Lutheran’s community impact. One member recalled the decision to get a pipe organ: “Traveling to places like Iowa. Kansas and Minnesota to find the perfect organ showed how much First values music.” The organ’s arrival also sparked free music lessons for members. From arranging rides for children to choir rehearsals to welcoming all skill levels into worship, music has always been central to First Lutheran.
Another member shared how music drew them in: “I visited on Reformation Sunday, and after hearing the brass and organ, I knew I’d found my home. Music and worship have always been the most meaningful parts of church life for me.”
Youth ministry has also shaped First Lutheran’s story. One member shared how their faith journey began in 1989 when Youth Minister Yvonne Steindal invited them on a trip. From “Sunday School with the Simpsons” to mission trips and Breakfast Club, youth ministry has helped kids and leaders grow in faith. “Watching the youth grow inspired me to grow my own faith,” they said.
Inclusivity has always been a core value for First Lutheran. One member was moved by the church’s bold Welcome Statement displayed throughout the building: “It’s one thing to say everyone is welcome, but another to declare it in big letters for all to see. It shows that First Lutheran is a place for everyone. It says, ‘You belong here.’”
For many, First Lutheran felt like home right away. One member, who returned to Nebraska after living in California, chose First Lutheran because it was the only church that followed up after his visit. Another member found her spiritual home here after trying other churches that didn’t feel right: “First Lutheran welcomed me, included me and valued my gifts. It truly felt like home.”
Another member remembered how welcomed she felt from day one. “That’s what I want to be for someone else. This church feels like family,” she said.
Many members shared stories of ministries that shaped their lives. One recounted mentoring youth during a mission trip to Idaho, calling it a “mountain top experience” and a defining moment.
In 2011, the church received the Scientists in Congregations grant, launching programs that connected faith and science. From talks on music and the brain to Science Cafes and a Star Party with telescopes, one member reflected on the lasting impact this ministry on him and his faith.
Another member reflected on the Creation Care team’s sustainability workshop, noting, “It wasn’t just about learning sustainable practices; it was about living out our faith by caring for God’s creation.”
First Lutheran has also been a source of support for members in times of need. One member recalled how the church helped her build life-long friendships. After losing both parents within six months, “The relationships I built here became my support group,” she said.
For some, the care they received was life-changing. One member remembered a pastor driving them to the ER during a severe headache. “If he hadn’t come, I might not be alive today,” they shared. Another spoke of how their son was embraced during incarceration, likening it to the story of the prodigal son.
Outreach has always been central to First Lutheran’s mission. One standout project is “Kick for Kids,” which provides socks and shoes to children in need. “It’s a bright spot, connecting us with schools and social workers to help students,” a member shared.
There have also been joyful moments, like canoeing the Niobrara River with the Hamilton Club, mission trips that deepened faith and relationships and a couple who married during a worship service. “It was so spiritual and meaningful, without the usual wedding fuss. The church members were surprised, but they got to share our special day,” they said.
These stories reflect who First Lutheran is – a community rooted in faith, hope and love, valuing relationships, youth, music, inclusivity, outreach and supporting one another. It’s a place where everyone is welcome.
