The Cost of Discipleship

By September 8, 2025News, Worship and Pray
Have you ever wanted something so badly, only to hear the price and feel your excitement crash? You realize you can’t afford it.

That’s exactly what happened in Sunday’s Gospel reading (Luke 14:25-33). Large crowds were following Jesus—not just curious onlookers, but people who had left their routines to follow him. They thought they were all in… until Jesus shared three hard truths:
“You cannot be my disciple if you don’t love me more than your family.”
“You cannot be my disciple if you won’t carry your cross.”
“You cannot be my disciple if you won’t give up everything you own.”
Most leaders aim to grow their following, not shrink it. But Jesus wasn’t building a fan club—he was calling people to a revolutionary way of life. These followers wanted the benefits without the sacrifice, the miracles without the commitment, the inspiration without the transformation. Sound familiar?

When Jesus said to “hate” family, he didn’t mean literal hatred. He meant, “I have to come first”—not out of ego, but because following him changes how we live and love. The cross meant death and no turning back. Jesus was saying, “Following me means dying to your old life.” And giving up possessions? It’s not about homelessness—it’s about recognizing everything belongs to God.

Jesus didn’t want blind followers. He told them to count the cost. He wanted disciples who knew what they were choosing and committed anyway.

In today’s “Church Lite” culture, we often want faith’s benefits with minimal commitment. But Jesus calls us to something deeper: a life of sacrificial love. Yes, following Jesus costs everything, but what we gain is worth far more.

Reflection Questions:
  • Am I a “casual follower,” seeking benefits while avoiding sacrifice?
  • What’s my “cross”—what do I need to give up to follow Jesus fully?
  • What possession, dream, or priority might God be asking me to hold loosely so I can hold him tightly?
