It’s now been nearly seven months since First Lutheran began its Welcoming Refugees work, knowing that many people had fled their Afghan homeland. So much has happened since the November arrival of the three related families we now co-sponsor through Lutheran Family Services. By early December, all had settled into apartments and by early January, students were enrolled in school and adults were learning English through daily on-line classes. Now, all four men are employed; bank accounts are opened; medical and dental care is being received; a new baby is anticipated; our city and “American ways” are more familiar; and everyone’s English is improving. Along the way, these seven determined adults and nine delightful children have become our friends.
The men are progressing in their goal of obtaining drivers’ licenses. This includes learners’ permit testing and driving practice to understand traffic laws and expectations which are very different than they experienced in Afghanistan. Next comes the goal of car ownership. Do you have or know of a vehicle in good running order which the church could obtain for a reduced price or as a donation? If so, please contact Trish Flury or Bettina Roundey. For two of the families, a vehicle for at least six people, including child safety seats, would be a dream come true. If you’d like to help in other ways, gift cards like Visa, WalMart, or SuperSaver are always welcome.
We give thanks for all who continue to be a part of this welcoming mission by offering time, resources, and prayers.
