Let’s face it – life in the United States has undergone significant changes over the past three months. Some Americans embrace these rapid shifts with gratitude, while others feel a deep sense of disconnection from the country they once knew. Opinions run the gamut – between friends, family, co-workers and even within households. For many, navigating conversations about politics has become tricky. Some tread cautiously, avoiding tension, while others feel compelled to speak out as they grapple with job loss, uncertainty, financial stress and changed plans. Life can feel strange and unsettled.
Faith communities, like First Lutheran, offer meaningful resources during times of change, disagreement and uncertainty. One such resource is a social message unanimously adopted by the ELCA Church Council on June 24, 2020, titled Government and Civic Engagement in the United States: Discipleship in a Democracy (https://www.ELCA.org/socialmessages). This message offers a powerful affirmation:
We are called to civic engagement. Over time, Lutherans have learned that energetic civic engagement is part of their baptismal vocation. The ELCA upholds the biblical belief that God calls God’s people to be active citizens and to ensure that everyone benefits from the good of government. (p. 14)
In addition to this message, First Lutheran hosts an ongoing discussion group:
Faithful Conversations: Navigating Current Events Together
Sundays 9:30-10:30 AM
Gathering Area (near the main entrance)
What is Faithful Conversations?
Faithful Conversations began in February 2025, inspired by an idea from Pastor Bill Peterson. Carol Olson and I volunteered to host informal discussions in the Gathering Area between Sunday services to gauge interest.
How has it been received?
In just a few months, more than 50 individuals have joined the conversations, with weekly attendance ranging from 10 to 40 participants. On any given Sunday, you’ll typically find about a dozen people gathered – coffee cups in hand – ready to listen, share and connect.
What happens during these gatherings?
Faithful Conversations is a way to live out our Christian faith while exploring the question: What is the responsibility of a Christian citizen to love their neighbor, offer charity, and practice kindness and mercy? Participants share honest reflections on current events, welcoming diverse perspectives. Resources are provided, including spiritual practices, self-care tips, reliable news sources and guidance on contacting elected officials. Together, attendees exchange ideas, deepen connections and build hope.
If you’re looking for meaningful conversations in a supportive community, we invite you to join us. Faithful Conversations is a simple yet profound way to practice your faith.
Hope to see you there!
